Anyone involved in the criminal justice industry understands that getting arrested and taken to jail is a stressful experience. The idea of being forced to wait in a small, confined area with a group of criminals is scary to think about for many people. And although there is good reason to be anxious about the thought of going to jail, those sharing a cell are generally in there for non-violent crimes.

In actuality, only a small percentage of inmates are arrested on violent crime charges, and they are placed in a separate holding cell. So there is really nothing to be frightened of. However, it is still important to take certain precautions to better alleviate the stress and discomfort of sitting in jail while waiting to post bond. Not only will good behavior get you a swifter booking process and better treatment from jail staff, proper behavior can also make your waiting period more comfortable and safe.

In the Jail Cell

Even though most fellow inmates are being held on non-violent criminal charges, it is best to keep your guard up while also maintaining a friendly attitude. Anyone could be emotionally unstable or under the influence of drugs or alcohol, so any external trigger could lead to outbursts, paranoia, anger, and more. For this reason, try to follow these tips when you are in jail waiting on a bail bond:

☛ Never cause a disruption by acting out or bringing attention to yourself.

☛ Do not act scared or nervous. Stay relaxed and act as if you would in an office waiting room.

☛ Do not make any derogatory statements or use foul language.

☛ Avoid talking about religion, politics, race, ethnicities, sexual conduct, and anything else that could be considered offensive.

☛ Do not disclose personal information to inmates, or volunteer information to jail staff other than the general information needed for the booking process.

☛ Do not be overly-friendly or too congenial. It could give inmates the wrong impression or send the wrong signals.

☛ Do not act suspicious or make any remarks that could make other inmates suspicious.

☛ Do not act overly-confident, arrogant, or condescending. Avoid making comments that imply you are too good to be in jail.
